经国务院学位评定委员会评定，1979年批准医工院具有药物化学、微生物药物学、药剂学、药理学、生化药物学和制药工程学6个学科的硕士学位授予权。1981年，医工院成为全国首批具有博士、硕士学位授予权单位之一。现设有博士后流动站。我院现有以中国工程院院士周后元和侯惠民为首的博士生导师20名，硕士生导师47名。在30多年里，医工院培养了133名博士、570名硕士， 目前在读博士、硕士研究生269名。
建院50多年来，作为应用性研究院，我们的研发始终定位于贴近产业、服务产业、和扎根产业；始终以解决老百姓“看病难，吃药贵”，以降低重要药物品种对国外进口的依存度，以推动我国医药工业技术进步为科研开发的出发点和立足点。因此，我们的研究课题始终来源于生产企业的需求；来源于“非专利药”品种的“me-too”类技术创新；来源于已有重大药物品种的技术改造和工艺创新；来源于“me-better”类具有自主知识产权药物的创新。长期以来，以做产品不做展品和样品为导向；以研究开发“新产品、新工艺”为导向；以解决制约产业化的关键技术为导向，培养和熏陶了一代又一代的研究生；为国家输送了一大批具有解决实际问题的高级药学人才。
进入新世纪，医工院的研究生教育又迈入了新台阶： 2000年，被国务院批准为第八批药学一级学科博士、硕士学位授予单位；同年2月与上海交通大学联合创办上海交通大学药学院；2010年3月，双方又续签了共建上海交通大学药学院的协议。使医工院作为医药行业高素质人才输出源之一的作用得到了进一步强化，正在成为培养高层次、复合型药学人才的培育基地。
目前，我院研究生培养教育的学制为三年，其中硕士研究生一年级理论课学习在上海交通大学进行，课题研究在我院的各实验室完成；博士研究生的理论课学习在我院进行，由我院的博士生导师授课，内容涵盖药学一级学科各专业，以便拓宽学生的专业知识面。我院的大部分研究课题直接来源于企业，所以，我院在培养教育中更注重理论与实践的紧密结合及提升学生解决工业生产中实际问题的能力。由于这一特色，我院的毕业生深受各用人单位的青睐，近年来的就业率达到100%。
Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry (SIPI) was authorized by the State Council Academic Degrees
Evaluation Committee to award Master’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry, Microbial Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics,
Pharmacology, Biochemical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Engineering in 1979. Two years later, SIPI became
one of the earliest institutes that can grant doctoral degree in China. SIPI is currently a mobile station for Post-docs. Our institute has employed 20 Doctoral advisors and 47 Master’s advisors, among which are headed by
two academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Houyuan Zhou and Prof. Huimin Hou. In more than
30 years, 133 Doctoral and 570 Master’s students have earned their degrees, and there are 269 graduate stud
-ents studying at SIPI now.
As an institute focus on applied research since its establishment, the research and development at SIPI has a close
relationship with industry. Our goals are to serve the industry, to solve the unreasonable high expense in disease
treatment, to reduce the dependence on imported drugs in several important categories, to promote the technolog
-ical advances of pharmaceutical industry in China. Therefore, our research projects always come from the demand
of pharmaceutical companies, from technological innovation of “me too” generic drugs, from technology reform and
process optimization for major class of drugs, from development of “me better” new drugs with intellectual properties.
Following the mind of developing a product other than a sample, studying on new products and processes, solving
the key technology in industrialization, lots of talented graduate students have been training at SIPI and become high-level pharmaceutical experts to solve practical problems all over the country.
The postgraduate education at SIPI has entered a higher stage since the new century. We were approved by the State
Council as one of the institutes that can award Master’s and Doctoral degrees in principal disciplines of pharmacy in
2000. In February of the same year, School of Pharmacy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University was jointly founded by SIPI
and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In March, 2010, the extended agreement for co-development of School of Pharmacy was signed between SIPI and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This makes SIPI to
be the cultivation base for senior and comprehensive pharmaceutical talents, leading the pharmaceutical industry in
China.
In general, graduate students will spend three years to finish their education at SIPI. Freshmen of Master’s students will
study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University for one year, and the research work afterward will be conducted in their advisors’ lab at SIPI. Courses of Doctoral program will be given by advisors from different disciplines at SIPI to improve and
broaden the students’ subject knowledge. Since the majority of the research projects come from pharmaceutical
companies, the most significance of our graduate students is the ability to solve the practical problems in industry by
combining the theory with practice. Employment status of graduated students from SIPI is 100% all the time, and they
have won high reputations from their employers.
